HONORING FIGHTERS AND SURVIVORS AS THE RACE TO END CANCER CONTINUES.
2023 marked the inaugural Survivor and Memorial Second Line in honor of Shantel Lanerie, wife of jockey Corey Lanerie who lost her battle to breast cancer in 2018. Since her passing Fair Grounds has named a race in her honor on the closing day of our season.
Getting close to his 5,000 career wins Corey returned to Fair Grounds to ride in the race dedicated to his late wife, and he dominated taking home the win. The owners donated half of their winnings from the race to the Shantel Lanerie Foundation. It was a fairytale ending to the season with Corey and Shantel’s daughter Brittlyn being present and serving as the Grand Marshal.
