Usually Wrong Dominates Kenner Memorial, Sets Track Record

NEW ORLEANS (Jan. 17, 2025) – BG Stables and Shaby Selman’s homebred Usually Wrong broke sharply and went straight to the lead, wiring a field of eight older males in the $100,000 Duncan F. Kenner Memorial Stakes on Road to the Derby Day at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Covering 5 1/2 furlongs over a firm turf course in 1:01.63, Usually Wrong set a new track record, eclipsing the previous mark of 1:01.90 set March 24, 2024, by Ova Charged.

Trained by Robertino Diodoro and piloted by Isaac Castillo, Usually Wrong was never menaced down the stretch and prevailed over Mondogetsbuckets by 2 3/4 lengths. Decided by a photo, Bear River finished third.

“That was how the horse felt today,” Castillo said. He wanted to be in the front today, so I let him. I felt him doing it really easy today.

From 11 career starts, Usually Wrong now has an 8-1-0 record with lifetime earnings of $400,055.

“He’s awesome,” Diodoro said. “He’s just gotten better, and I think a lot of credit goes to the owner and breeder who have given us the time we needed to have him ready for the next race. I think that’s definitely paid off coming into his five-year-old year.”

Bet down to favoritism, Usually Wrong paid $5.00, $3.20, and $3.20.
