Five Stakes On Tap For Inaugural FG Quarter Horse Meet

NEW ORLEANS, La. (July 3, 2008) - Five stakes, each worth $40,000, will headline the inaugural Quarter Horse meet at Fair Grounds Aug. 20-24.

The five stakes races have been named in honor of areas and neighborhoods of New Orleans.

The opening-day card will feature the City Park Stakes for 2-year-old Louisiana-breds at 330 yards.

A stakes tripleheader on Aug. 23 includes the Mid-City Stakes for older state-breds at 400 yards, the Lakeview Stakes for older horses at 870 yards and the Garden District Stakes for 2-year-olds at 350 yards.

The final stakes race of the meet is the Vieux Carre Stakes for older horses at 330 yards on closing day.

The meet's condition book and stakes nomination forms are now available online on Fair Grounds' website at fairgroundsracecourse.com. Printed copies of the condition book will be available beginning this weekend through racing and HBPA offices around the state.

Nominations for all five stakes close Aug. 4. Entries for the meet will be taken over a three-day span from Aug. 10-12.

Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, the nation's third-oldest Thoroughbred racing facility, has been in operation since 1872. Fair Grounds' 137th Thoroughbred season will run from Nov. 14, 2008, through March 29, 2009, and will be preceded by its inaugural Quarter Horse meet from Aug. 20-24, 2008.
