FAIR GROUNDS RACE COURSE & SLOTS TO SPONSOR SUSTAINING OUR URBAN LANDSCAPE (SOUL)

This Saturday, January 5th, 2019; employees from the Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will volunteer their time to allow Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL) to continue its mission of “driving a resilient and environmentally equitable New Orleans by reforesting our urban landscape” by helping to plant 100 trees in the Mid-City and Gentilly areas.

“The Fair Grounds values our 145-year history in DeSaix and Faubourg St. John, so it is only natural that we continue to give back to the community by sponsoring SOUL’s expansion into our neighborhoods,” said Fair Grounds President and General Manager Doug Shipley.

These efforts allow SOUL to now be able to assist the Gentilly area and, in particular, Fortin Street. Representatives from SOUL note that Fortin Street suffers from extreme flooding problems and the trees will help alleviate stormwater runoff, air pollution, subsidence, and energy bills while beautifying the city.

Employees from Entergy, as well as community members, will also donate their time to plant trees throughout Mid-City and Gentilly from 10 am – 1 pm.
