PATENA sports a superb pedigree and was a closing second in the Lecomte S. (G3) in his debut over this oval, and the colt was since purchased privately by a syndicate including IEAH Stables, who campaigned Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness (G1) winner Big Brown in 2008. Patena will make his first start for trainer Richard Dutrow in the Louisiana Derby.

The Kentucky-bred displayed excellent Canadian form as a juvenile, winning the Display S. at Woodbine, and he opened 2009 with a terrific effort in the Lecomte, receiving a whopping 110 BRIS Late Pace rating for his fast finish. Patena rates as a major player on Saturday.

Pedigree Analysis

Patena. Being by Seeking The Gold, who has sired champions such as Dubai Millennium and Heavenly Prize and the first foal out of a stakes winning, and grade one placed, mare by leading sire A. P. Indy, Patena owns a classic pedigree. This family is deep with class and stamina with his third dam being Passing Mood, the dam of Canadian Horse of the Year, With Approval and Belmont S. (G1) winner Touch Gold. On paper the sky is the limit for Patena.
