Contender Analysis

PAPA CLEM will make his dirt debut off a very encouraging second to Pioneerof the Nile in the Robert B. Lewis S. (G2) at Santa Anita. A maiden winner two starts back over Mayor Marv, who went on to easily capture the Turf Paradise Derby, Papa Clem made a huge transition going from maidens to a graded stakes event for Glen Stute. He nearly rewarded his trainer's confidence, leading in midstretch before grudgingly giving way by a half-length.

While the Bo Hirsch homebred has solely raced on synthetic ovals leading up to this, Papa Clem brings excellent early speed to a Louisiana Derby field that appears to lack a true front runner. He could be the one to catch turning for home.

Pedigree Analysis

Papa Clem. Being out of the speedy Miss Houdini, who is by the sprinter Belong To Me, one might question Papa Clem’s ability to be competitive at longer distances. However, these doubts may be balanced by his being by Smart Strike, the sire of Horse of the Year Curlin and turf Champion English Channel. In addition Papa Clem’s second dam is Magical Maiden who proved her stamina with a closing third place finish in the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1).
