Contender Analysis

By: James Scully (Brisnet Editorial)

UNO MAS dropped his first three career starts on synthetic tracks, but he improved when switching to dirt at the Fair Grounds, winning a maiden special weight by 4 ¼ lengths and an allowance race by 2 ¼ lengths. In the latter, he knocked off the eventual Lecomte (G3) and Risen Star (G3) hero Friesan Fire.

Uno Mas recorded steady, yet not spectacular, efforts in the Lecomte (4th) and Risen Star (3rd) for Steve Asmussen, and he leads the Louisiana Derby field with four efforts over the Fair Grounds oval. The Zollars and Wagner-owned colt looms as a solid in-the-money candidate on Saturday, but he’ll need to take a step up off his previous stakes performances to take down the trophy.
