Contender Analysis

By: James Scully (Brisnet Editorial)

FLYING PEGASUS won his career debut at Churchill Downs last summer and captured a Delaware Park allowance before concluding his juvenile year with a game second behind the highly regarded Charitable Man in the Futurity S. (G2) at Belmont.

The James Spence homebred returned in a big way this year when a solid second in the Risen Star S. (G3) for conditioner Ralph Nicks, tracking the pace while very wide, taking a brief lead in the lane and finishing well to retain the second spot in his two-turn debut. The Kentucky-bred apparently didn't miss a step with the layoff and is eligible to keep moving forward in his second start back. His tactical speed makes him a serious threat in the Louisiana Derby.

Pedigree Analysis

Flying Pegasus. By 2000 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Fusaichi Pegasus who has sired grade one winners such as Roman Ruler, Bandini and Haradasun, Flying Pegasus is out of Golden Rod S. (G3) winner Lilly Capote who has produced three other winners including the stakes placed Mythical Pegasus and America’s Storm. While his sire get’s his fair share of route winners, Flying Pegasus’s stamina against top runners maybe questionable being out a mare by the speedy Capote.
