Contender Analysis

By: James Scully (Brisnet Editorial)

SOUL WARRIOR finished second to Free Country when making his career debut at Churchill Downs in November and broke his maiden next time out at Fair Grounds, winning a one-mile and 40-yard maiden special weight event by 3 ¾ lengths in late December. The Zayat Stables-owned colt exits a fast-finishing sixth in the Risen Star S. (G3).

The Steve Asmussen trainee fell far behind during the early stages of the Risen Star, and he passed half the field in the final furlongs, registering a 103 BRIS Late Pace number. Soul Warrior is eligible to improve off this encouraging effort in his second start versus winners, but he must avoid leaving himself with too much to do in the stretch.

Pedigree Analysis:

By: Tim Holland (Brisnet Editorial)

Soul Warrior.  Although he broke his maiden at a mile and forty yards, Soul Warrior’s pedigree leads one to believe he will have serious stamina issues in two-turn races against top-class opposition. He is by the hot freshman sire of last year, Lion Heart, whose runners have an average winning distance of 6.3f and few of which have won at more than a mile. Further, his dam is by the sprint sire Meadowlake, and he is a half-brother to My Miss Storm Cat whose biggest success came in the Desert Stormer Handicap over six furlongs.
