Contender Analysis

By: James Scully (Brisnet Editorial)

FREE COUNTRY made only one start at two, winning his career debut at Churchill Downs in November, and recorded a smart allowance victory at nine panels when making his sophomore debut at Gulfstream Park on January 8.

Owned by Silver Wing Stable and trained by Kenny McPeek, the dark bay colt was sent off the 9-5 favorite in his stakes debut, the February 14 Sam F. Davis S. (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs, but lacked a rally in the stretch and checked in a listless fourth in the as the 9-5 choice. We've seen many horses not handle the surface at Tampa Bay and return with big showings elsewhere, so we would not be surprised in the least if this one ran back to his allowance tilt. Expect a stalk-and-pounce trip under Ken Desormeaux.

Pedigree Analysis

By: Tim Holland (Brisnet Editorial)

Free Country. From the initial crop of one mile and three sixteenths allowance winner Big Country, Free Country is the fifth winner out of a mare by Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) winner Wild Again. While this pedigree is a little weak in the first generation Free Country’s second dam is the grade three winner Baldski’s Holiday who is the grand-dam of Pimlico Special H. (G1) winner, Include.
