Stungbythestorm Stings Recapturetheglory at FG

Coastal Racing's Stungbythestorm pressed the pace of King Dan, took command late and bested that rival by a half-length in a $46,000 allowance optional claiming race Sunday at Fair Grounds, one that could impact next month's New Orleans Handicap.

Louie Roussel III and Ronnie Lamarque's 2008 Illinois Derby winner Recapturetheglory, returning to competition following a six-month layoff, finished third, 5 1/4 lengths farther back, in Sunday's race, contested at a mile and 40 yards over a sloppy track.

Conditioned by Eclipse Award-winning trainer Steve Asmussen and ridden by jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, Stungbythestorm paid $9, $4 and $2.80 and increased his career earnings to $133,820 with his third win in 10 lifetime starts, while recording a final time of 1:40.71.

King Dan, who set early splits of 24.29 and 47.89, returned $3.60 and $2.80 while Recapturetheglory paid $2.40 in the show position.

The $500,000 Grade II New Orleans Handicap, showcase event for older horses at Fair Grounds each winter, will observe its 84th running March 14. It is one of four Grade II stakes on Louisiana Derby Day.

Racing resumes Monday at Fair Grounds with a 10-race program beginning at 12:30 p.m.
