Stakes Doubleheader Saturday with Happy Ticket and Jackson Memorial
Two annual Fair Grounds sprint stakes races restricted to accredited Louisiana-breds share top billing as the headline attractions for Saturday’s 11-race program at the Crescent City oval.
Brittlyn Stable’s Good Human Bean and Southern Equine Stable’s Cajun Conference are set to match strides once again in Saturday’s $60,000 Happy Ticket Stakes for older fillies and mares at 5 1/2-furlongs, while Charles Fletcher’s My Star Runner looms a solid 9-5 choice in the $60,000 John Jackson Memorial, also at that same dash distance but open to older members of either sex.
The 39th running of the Happy Ticket Stakes, renamed to honor the top money earner of all time among Louisiana-breds, will be run as the finale on the afternoon program, while the fifth renewal of the John Jackson Memorial posthumously recognizes the services of the long time legal council of the Louisiana State Racing Commission and is scheduled as the eighth race of the day.
The front-running My Star Runner, trained by Cody Autrey, will be ridden by Miguel Mena in the Jackson Memorial, but could receive strong competition from Lee Young Farm’s Flashy Wise Cat, the 5-2 second choice in the morning line. Flashy Wise Cat overtook the projected favorite in their last meeting in Fair Grounds’ $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Sprint on Dec. 11 but that was at six furlongs. Trained by Troy Young, Flashy Wise Cat will be ridden once again by Kerwin Clark.
Not to be overlooked at 9-2 in the Jackson Memorial morning line is Foxwood Plantation’s Foreign Production, who finished third behind the top two in the Champions Day Sprint but won both the $60,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint in Shreveport and the $100,000 Louisiana Showcase Sprint at Evangeline Downs last year. Carlos Gonzalez is named in the irons.
Completing the Jackson Memorial field is John Charles, Gerard Melancon; Mr. Porter, David Bourque; Chief Jay, Shaun Bridgmohan and Down the Road, James Graham.
Previous to Saturday’s Happy Ticket Stakes, Cajun Conference defeated Good Human Bean by 2 1/4-lengths in the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Ladies Sprint Dec. 11 here at six furlongs, but will have to adjust tactics going the 5 ½ furlongs of Saturday’s dash. Cajun Conference will be ridden by Miguel Mena while Good Human Bean has Corey Lanerie slated for the saddle.
Others named to face those two in the Happy Ticket are: Aunt Kat Kat, Kerwin Clark; Shutupanddance, Richard Eramia; Thruthegardengate, Rosie Napravnik; Cherry Forever, Shaun Bridgmohan; Speedacious, Carlos Gonzalez; Lady Wildee, Eddie Martin Jr.; and Anything But Quiet, James Graham.
