Southern Region Wins Friday
Willow Lane Stable’s Southern Region pressed the early pace, took command in upper stretch and then withstood a late bid by the late-closing Hype, owned by Al and Bill Ulwelling, to capture Friday’s $51,000 5 ½-furlong sprint feature at Fair Grounds by a head.
Finishing a nose farther back in third was David Fontenot’s Allworkandnoplay who also closed willingly but could not match the top two.
Trained by Ronny Werner, registering his second winner of the day, Southern Region was ridden by Jamie Theriot and returned mutuels of $11.20, $6.20 and $5. The 5-year-old Stormy Atlantic gelding dashed the distance in 1:05.44 and increased his career earnings to $169,784 with his third win in 17 lifetime starts.
Hype paid $11.60 and $7.60 as the runner-up while Allworkandnoplay returned $5.20 in the show position.
Brent Gasaway and Ian Yarnot’s Future Covenant cut out early splits of 22.21 and 46.43 before tiring in the lane.
Racing resumes Saturday at Fair Grounds with an 11-race program featuring the $60,000 Happy Ticket Stakes as well as the $60,000 John Jackson Memorial. Post time is 12:40 p.m.
