Santa Super Saturday Seminars
GARY WEST FAN EDUCATION SEMINAR DEC 18 – Veteran turf writer and handicapper Gary West will kick off a new Fan Education series with a free hour-long seminar before the races on Santa Super Saturday, Dec. 18. “Spicy Odds, Sharp Horses and Black Swans: Winning Strategies at the Racetrack” will cover both basic handicapping principles as well as advanced approaches to turning a long-term profit. West, born and reared in New Orleans, covers horse racing for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The seminar is set for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Phoenix Room on the second floor of the Grandstand. The monthly Fan Education series will continue on every graded stakes day: Road to the Derby Kickoff Day on Jan. 22, Louisiana Derby Preview Day on Feb. 19 and Louisiana Derby Day on March 26.
TWO MORE HORSE OWNERSHIP SEMINARS THIS SEASON -- Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots will present two more free Horse Ownership Seminars on the following dates during the 2010-2011 Thoroughbred Racing Season:
Saturday, Dec. 18 (Santa Super Saturday), 9:30-11 a.m. Guest speakers Bret Calhoun, trainer, and Rob Byrne, Louisiana-based ownership syndicate manager.
Saturday, Jan. 22 (Lecomte Stakes/Road to the Derby Kickoff Day), 9:30-11 a.m. Guest speaker Dallas Stewart, trainer.
Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association Secretary/Treasurer Roger Heitzmann III also will address the group and take questions at each session. Seminars are held in the Black Gold Room on the second floor of the Derby Building, across from the 1/16-mile pole. Guests will enjoy complimentary coffee and pastries while taking in the sights and sounds of morning training hours. After training ends at 10 a.m., guest speakers will address the crowd and answer questions pertaining to horse ownership.
