Rachel Alexandra Stretches Her Legs Monday

Horse of the Year candidate Rachel Alexandra, owned by Stonestreet Stables and Harold McCormick and conditioned by Eclipse Award-winning trainer Steve Asmussen, stretched her legs with a once-around gallop over the Fair Grounds course shortly before training hours ended Monday morning under the watchful eye of Asmussen, who also won Fair Grounds leading trainer honors last season.

Rachel Alexandra easily captured the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks last March 14, seven weeks prior to her facile tally in the Kentucky Oaks, and in the process became the fourth of the last five Fair Grounds Oaks winners to go on and win the Kentucky Oaks.

After winning the Kentucky Oaks, the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro beat the boys in the Preakness, annexed Belmont’s Grade I Mother Goose and then defeated male rivals once again in Monmouth’s Grade I Haskell Invitational and Saratoga’s Grade I Woodward.

Although Rachel Alexandra’s schedule for the upcoming season has yet to be announced, Fair Grounds officials are hopeful that the track’s newly-created $200,000 New Orleans Ladies for fillies and mares on March 13 would be a possible target.
