Pantherinthefastlane Takes Treme, Capping Five-Win Opening Day for Lujan

Alfonso Lujan, the all-time leading Quarter Horse rider at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, asserted that this is his meet by winning five races on Opening Day, including the featured $40,000 Treme Stakes aboard Pantherinthefastlane.

“It was neat on a good day like this,” said Lujan, who estimated it had been “three or four years” since he last won five on a card. “After the six-week layoff (from the end of the Delta Downs season to today) I was eager to start the meet, ready to go. You don’t expect this kind of a day and they don’t come often.”

In the Treme, for 3-year-old Louisiana-breds at 350 yards, Lujan dueled for the early lead with favored Jess Like Alabama before inching ahead to win by a neck in :17.523 while earning a 103 Speed Index. The odds-on Jess Like Alabama held second, a half-length to the good of Very Intriguing.

Pantherinthefastlane, by Panther Mountain, paid $22.20, $6 and $4.60 as the 10-1 third choice in a field of 10.

Live racing at Fair Grounds resumes Thursday with a first post of 12:40 p.m. CDT.
