Lamarque Ford the Perfect Partner for Risen Star Stakes and Louisiana Derby Preview Day

In 1987, a Louisiana-born car dealer named Ronnie Lamarque became nationally recognized horse racing royalty as co-owner of Risen Star, a son of Secretariat who won the Louisiana Derby and two-thirds of the Triple Crown. Almost 25 years later, Risen Star and Lamarque remain essential to the Louisiana Derby, although now it’s for their monikers and the standard of excellence that each represent.

The Grade II Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford will be run at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots for the 24th time this Saturday, attracting top 3-year-old horses out to prove they belong in the Louisiana Derby and possibly the Kentucky Derby. The race has carried the name of Risen Star for 24 years, but this renewal will mark the first time Lamarque has signed on as a presenting partner, not just for the race but for the entire racing program, billed as Louisiana Derby Preview Day Presented by Lamarque Ford.

“Every longtime New Orleanian remembers Risen Star and his charismatic owner that sang in the winner’s circle on national television,” said Fair Grounds Partnerships & Retail Manager Leslie Monson. “Our partnership is the type of perfect fit you look for in this business – an opportunity where each brand resonates more than it would in any other setting because of all these positive historical associations between Risen Star, Lamarque and Fair Grounds.”

Louisiana Derby Preview Day Presented by Lamarque Ford is the second of three major graded stakes days during the 139th Thoroughbred Racing Season at Fair Grounds. Six important stakes events will be contested, including the 38th Running of the Grade II, $300,000 Risen Star Stakes, for 3-year-olds with Kentucky Derby aspirations. The 12-race program begins at 12:10 p.m. CST.
