Kentucky Derby Produces Big Easy Tri
Kentucky Derby 137 was widely called one of the most difficult in history to decipher, but hitting the trifecta turned out to be easy, as in ‘Big Easy.’ All of the top three finishers have connections to New Orleans, starting with winner Animal Kingdom, owned by Team Valor International, a partnership including several New Orleanians.
The runner-up, Nehro, finished second in the Louisina Derby for trainer Steve Asmussen, the second all-time leading trainer at Fair Grounds and a member of the track’s Hall of Fame. A neck behind him was Mucho Macho Man, who was third in the Louisiana Derby after taking the Risen Star Stakes in February.
Pants On Fire, the Louisiana Derby winner, and jockey Rosie Napravnik, leading rider at Fair Grounds this past season, checked in ninth.
Other Fair Grounds connections to the Kentucky Derby included jockey Shaun Bridgmohan, the 2009-2010 leading rider at Fair Grounds, who guided Risen Star runner-up Santiva to a sixth-place finish; and Kerwin Clark, who rode Risen Star also-ran Decisive Moment to finish 14th.
Sugar Bowl Stakes winner Archarcharch was a disappointing 15th and is believed to have suffered an injury.
Fair Grounds congratulates all of the Kentucky Derby participants who race at Fair Grounds or call New Orleans home!
