'Jazz' Jazzes Up Pick 6 for Louisiana Derby Preview Day
NEW ORLEANS, La. (February 6, 2009) - Jazz in the Park, dismissed at odds of 23-1, all but assured a five-figure Pick 6 carryover for Louisiana Derby Preview Day when he captured the $46,000 allowance feature Friday at Fair Grounds.
The Pick 6 was not hit Friday, and a carryover of $13,354 awaits customers for Saturday's Pick 6, which will cover the six stakes on Saturday's 11-race card.
Jazz in the Park, trained by Bobby Barnett and ridden by Miguel Mena, lit up the tote board with mutuels of $48.40, $18.60 and $12.20. He got up in the last strides for a half-length victory over another longshot, Woodbourne.
The winner increased his career earnings to $94,340 with his third career win in 11 lifetime starts while accomplishing the about one-mile distance in 1:38.22.
Woodbourne paid $19.80 and $12.80 while crossing under the wire three-quarters of a length in front of Terryhowieandjimmy, who paid $7.40 to show.
George's Cigar made the pace with fractions of 24.26 and 48.65 before tiring to finish seventh.
First post for Saturday's card, which features the $200,000 Grade III Risen Star Stakes for 3-year-olds and four other Grade III stakes, is 12:30 p.m. CST.
