Hotel Monteleone and Fair Grounds Continue Long History on Road to the Derby Kickoff Day

Hotel Monteleone and Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, two New Orleans institutions that each date back to the 19th Century, have been closely associated for so long nobody can recall exactly when the relationship started. What is known for certain, however, is that Hotel Monteleone was among the racetrack’s first box-seat holders and today remains the most senior of them all, having held a six-seat parcel of the various Fair Grounds grandstands for at least eight decades.

A new chapter of the longstanding intertwined history of the French Quarter hotel, celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, and Fair Grounds, in the midst of its 139th Thoroughbred Racing Season, begins Saturday with Road to the Derby Kickoff Day Presented by Hotel Monteleone. The first major graded stakes day of the year also will mark the first time Hotel Montleone has served as a presenting sponsor for one of Fair Grounds’ most important live racing programs.

“Hotel Montelone has been the official hotel of Fair Grounds for years because they provide exceptional accommodations steeped in New Orleans history,” said Fair Grounds Partnerships & Retail Manager Leslie Monson. “It’s always our first recommendation for out-of-town guests. We’re delighted to be associated with such a highly respected and widely known New Orleans business.”

Since 1886, the Hotel Monteleone has proudly stood as one of the first landmarks in the famous French Quarter. The Monteleone is the Quarter’s largest full-service hotel, featuring 600 newly renovated, luxurious guestrooms and suites. The Hotel Monteleone has long been the home to some of the world’s most famous and colorful characters, like Ernest Hemmingway, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner and Truman Capote. The Hotel has recently won the AAA Four Diamond Award for upscale service and their 20th Pinnacle Award.

Road to the Derby Kickoff Day Presented by Hotel Monteleone is the first of three major graded stakes days during the 139th Thoroughbred Racing Season at Fair Grounds. Six important stakes events will be contested, including the 67th Running of the Grade III, $100,000 Lecomte Stakes, for 3-year-olds with Kentucky Derby aspirations. The 13-race program begins at 12:10 p.m. CST.
