Grassy Nellie Keeps Robby on a Roll Thursday at Fair Grounds
NEW ORLEANS, LA (March 12, 2009) – Robby Albarado drew off to daylight in Fair Grounds’ jockey standings with three wins Thursday at Fair Grounds, including a his two-length win astride Grassy Nellie in the $44,000 allowance feature for older fillies and mares on the turf.
Albarado, seeking a record seventh Fair Grounds riding title, ended the day with 74 wins. Last year’s leading rider, Jamie Theriot, went winless Thursday and remains at 70 wins for the meeting.
Trained by Louie Roussel III, Grassy Nellie circled the leaders when set down for the drive and accomplished the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the Stall-Wilson turf course in 1:45.28. She returned $6.40, $3.20, $2.20 while increasing her career earnings to $61,100 with her second win in six starts.
Category Seven rallied to gain the place, returning $4.40 and $2.60, while finishing a neck to the good of Fan Dame, who paid $2.40.
Fighter Wing, who set early fractions of 24:54 and 49.58, tired to finish fifth.
Racing resumes Friday at Fair Grounds with its first nine-race twilight racing program of the season. First post is 2:50 p.m. CDT.
