Fair Grounds Legend Romero Inducted into National Hall of Fame
Randy Romero, who still holds the Fair Grounds single-season win record with 181 in 1983-84, was inducted into the National Racing Hall of Fame in a ceremony held Friday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Romero won four riding titles at Fair Grounds (1979-80, 1980-81, 1983-84 and 1984-85). He also is one of six jockeys to have won six races on a single Fair Grounds card, a feat he accomplished on Feb. 8, 1984.
Romero's biggest Fair Grounds victory, and one he considers among the most special of his career, was the 1993 Louisiana Derby aboard Dixieland Heat, trained by his brother, Gerald Romero. His other top Fair Grounds stakes winners include A Letter to Harry, Taylor's Special, Sefa's Beauty and Native Mommy.
