Cash Refund Pays Off in Sunday Feature
Richard, Bertram and Elaine Klein’s Cash Refund proved no disappointment to those who backed him down to 3-10 favoritism when he withstood a strong late challenge from Sam-Son Farms’ Written in Stone to win Sunday’s $47,000 Fair Grounds sprint feature by a half-length.
Cash Refund was making his first start since finishing second to Capt. Candyman Can in the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs on May 19.
Trained by Steve Margolis, a conditioner who is enjoying a hugely successful meeting, and ridden by Brian Hernandez Jr., also off to an excellent start, Cash Refund paid mutuels of $2.60, $2.20 and $2.10, and increased his career earnings to $105,360 with his third win in four lifetime starts.
Cash Refund pressed the pace briefly before taking command prior to his half recorded in 45.75 and then accomplished the three-quarter mile distance with a final time of 1:09.92.
Written in Stone, who returned $6 and $4, was easily second best, finishing 5 1/2-lengths to the good of Maggi Moss’s Moyer’s Pond, who paid $3.40 in the show position.
Zayat Stables’ Schneerson recorded the first split of 22.07 before weakening to fourth at the wire.
Racing resumes Monday at Fair Grounds for the 31st day of the 2009-2010 Thoroughbred Racing Season Presented by Miller Lite. First post for Monday’s nine-race program is 1 p.m.
