"And They're On..." New Kentucky Derby Slots Debut at Fair Grounds
The excitement of the “greatest two minutes in sports” can now be found anytime at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, where four brand new Kentucky Derby slot machines made their international debut Thursday.
In addition to the five-reel action, players can win the chance to pick three horses in a fictional Derby that unfolds on monitors above each station. Kentucky Derby slots are penny progressives with jackpots that can pay off like a real winning Kentucky Derby superfecta.
Bugler Barney Floyd officially opened the Kentucky Derby machines on Thursday with the traditional "Call to the Post" at 10 a.m.
Four Twin Spires Slots Rewards Club members were randomly selected for $100 of free play and had the honor of placing the first spins. One of them, Octave—a Fair Grounds regular who visits the Slots facility “three or four times a week”—pronounced himself a fan of the Kentucky Derby slots after only a few minutes of play.
“I like playing horses, too, so I like this,” Octave said. “It’s fascinating.”
In coming days, Fair Grounds and Aristocrat, the creator of the Kentucky Derby slots, will try to help the chances of customers by giving away 1,000 lucky golden horseshoes, as well as 250 real horseshoes from Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby.
Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots hours
The 600-plus state-of-the-art slot machines and the Grandstand Simulcast facility at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots are open for business every evening during the annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, also known as Jazz Fest, April 23-25 and April 29-May 2. Even though the Slots and Simulcasting will suspend play during the day, Jazz Fest visitors are invited to join in the after-party fun at Fair Grounds as music-filled afternoons segue into enchanted and thrilling New Orleans evenings.
The Slots facility and Grandstand Simulcasting will open to pedestrians at 6:30 p.m. on Jazz Fest days and vehicles will be able to access the parking lot no later than 8:30 p.m.
The Slots and Silmulcasting areas will maintain their regular hours—9 a.m. to midnight weekdays—on days between Jazz Fest weekends.
