Absolutely Smart Wins Sunday Feature
John Murphy Sr and Chris Swann’s Absolutely Smart made the pace and drew off late to win Sunday’s filly and mare feature by six lengths on the 81st day of Fair Grounds’ 85-day 2009-2010 Thoroughbred Racing Season Presented by Miller Lite.
Absolutely Smart, trained by Bernie Flint and ridden by apprentice Jansen Melancon, returned mutuels of $4.80 and $2.40 with no show wagering in field reduced to four after the race was taken off the grass and run on the main track. After recording early splits of 23.64 and 48.48, the daughter of Vindication accomplished the 1 1/16-mile distance in 1:41.46, and increased her career earnings to $75,779 with her third win in 23 lifetime starts.
Dolphus Morrison’s Megawattie prompted the pace, could not stay with the winner but was easily second best and paid $2.40 to place.
Racing resumes for the last Monday of the 2009-2010 season at Fair Grounds with a 10-race program beginning at 1:10 p.m.
