Ike and Dawn Thrash and Sam and Janet Alley’sKatie’s Eyes is a maiden no more after winning Friday’s 20th anniversary edition of the $40,000 South Mississippi Owners/Breeders Stakes on Valentine’s Day at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

After pressing the pace briefly under jockey Leandro Goncalves, the daughter of Leroidesanimaux trained by Grant Forster took command entering the lane and drew off in the final sixteenth for a 7 ½-length tally.

Katie’s Eyes returned mutuels of $2.40, $2.10 and $2.10, toured the six-furlong distance in 1:11.51 and increased her earnings to $28,400 with her initial score.

William Reed’s Daylighting rallied boldly in the stretch, could not stay with the winner but was easily second best, paying $2.20 and $2.10 while finishing six lengths to the good of Pop-A-Top’s Foolish Reform, who paid $2.20 to show.

Rachel Denius’s Kittywithalilsalt alternated for the early lead with the winner while registering splits of :22.28 and :46.45 before giving way.
