Stakes Advance: South Mississippi Owners/Breeders Stakes
Katie's Eyes Focused on Friday's Stakes Race at FG
Ike and Dawn Thrash and Sam and Janet Alley’sKatie’s Eyes, a competitive third beaten a length and a half in her career debut Dec. 29, should rule the choice off that outing when she faces five sophomore rivals of both sexes in Friday’s 20th anniversary edition of the $40,000 South Mississippi Owners/Breeders Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
The six-furlong sprint is restricted to 3-year-olds which comply with the bylaws of the South Mississippi Owners and Breeders Association. Fillies get in the dash with 117 pounds while colts and geldings are to shoulder 122. However, maidens are allowed five pounds – a concession that will negate itself by benefitting the entire field.
Katie’s Eyes is a Kentucky-bred daughter of Leroidesanimaux, sire of 2013 Dubai World Cup and 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom. She is trained by Grant Forster, who breezed the filly a half-mile last Monday in 48.20. Jockey Leandro Goncalves will be aboard once again.
Capable of providing strong competition for Katie’s Eyes is William Reed’s Daylighting, a Florida-bred daughter of Graeme Hall who finished second to Fair Grounds’ Battle of New Orleans stakes heroine Kiss to Remember on Dec. 5 at the local oval. She is trained by Bret Calhoun, who worked her four furlongsWednesday in 49.20. Miguel Mena is named to handle the reins Friday.
Named to oppose the top pair are four Louisiana-bred sophomores: Divine Equine LLC’s Yankee Grind, Marcelino Pedroza up; William Gilmore’s Intimidator’s Cat, Martin Ramirez; Rachel Denius’s Kittywithalilsalt, Jamie Theriot; and Pop-A-Top LLC’s Foolish Reform, James Graham.
