Windy Hill Farm’s Smarty’s Echo, a son of 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Smarty Jones, has been added to the list of probable starters for the 70th anniversary edition of the Grade III Lecomte Stakes to be contested Jan. 18 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots on Road to the Derby Kickoff Day.
Trained by Anne Smith, who prepared Windy Hill’s Nates Mineshaft to win Fair Grounds’ Grade II New Orleans and Grade III Mineshaft handicaps two years ago, Smarty’s Echo was the runner-up in Keeneland’s Grade I Breeders’ Futurity last fall before suffering a troubled trip in the Grade I Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in his last start at Santa Anita Nov. 2.
The $200,000 Lecomte, first leg of Fair Grounds’ sophomore series that concludes with the $1 million Louisiana Derby March 29, was won last year by Calumet Farm’s Oxbow, who went on to victory in the Preakness Stakes later last spring.
DIVINE BEAUTY HEADS $125,000 SILVERBULLETDAY PROBABLE STARTERS—Brereton Jones’s Divine Beauty, heroine of the $60,000 Letellier Memorial on Santa Super Saturday at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots, heads the list of those likely for the $125,000 Silverbulletday Stakes on Jan. 18’s Road to the Derby Kickoff Day at the Crescent City oval.
Others likely at this time for the Silverbulletday, which starts the local sophomore fillies’ series that concludes with the Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks onLouisiana Derby Day March 29, are Glockenburg LLC’s Army, Agave Racing Stable’s Awesome Jill, and Charles Fipke’s Unbridled Forever.
STRING KING TO TRY OPEN COMPANY IN GRADE III COL. E. R. BRADLEY ‘CAP—Charles Craig Smith’s String King, two-time winner of the $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Turf and runner-up by a nose in this season’s $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic, is slated to try open company again in the Grade III Col. E. R. Bradley Handicap on Road to the Derby Kickoff Day Jan. 18 at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Trained by his owner-breeder Charlie Smith, String King finished second in last year’s Col. Bradley and third in last year’s Grade II Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap.
Others likely at this time for this year’s Col. Bradley are Cathy and Bob Zollars’ Daddy Nose Best, winner of this season’s $75,000 Diliberto Memorial Dec. 21, and Maribel Ruelas’ Potomac River, hero of Churchill’s Grade III River City Handicap at last asking Nov. 23.
The Col. Bradley is the first leg of three-race Stall-Wilson turf course series for older grass horses that concludes with the Grade II Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap on Louisiana Derby Day March 29.
PRAYER FOR RELIEF TO ANSWER CALL OF $100,000 LOUISIANA HANDICAP —Zayat Stables’ Prayer for Relief, much the best in the $75,000 Tenacious Handicap at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots Dec. 21, heads the current list of those likely for the $100,000 Louisiana Handicap on Jan. 18’s Road to the Derby Kickoff Day.
The Louisiana Handicap is the first leg of a three-race series for older horses on the main track that concludes with the Grade II New Orleans Handicap on Louisiana Derby Day March 29.
Others likely for the Louisiana Handicap at this time are Jim Tafel’s Street Spice, third in the Grade II Hawthorne Gold Cup Nov. 30, Robert and Lawana Low’s Agent Di Nozzo and Maggi Moss’s Grand Contender, third and fourth respectively behind Prayer for Relief in the Tenacious.
2013 LOUISIANA DERBY WINNER REVOLUTIONARY RETURNS SATURDAY—WinStar Farm’s Revolutionary, third in last year’s Kentucky Derby after winning the Grade II Louisiana Derby, returns to competition Saturday in one-mile optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park.
