Jockey Leandro Goncalves Wins Five Saturday at Fair Grounds
Veteran jockey Leandro Goncalves posted the first five-win day by any Fair Grounds jockey this season during Saturday’s 11-race program. Goncalves rode seven races on the card.
The Brazilian native won the third race aboard Ten Broeck Farm’s Soft Wind for trainer Grant Forster and a $26.80 win mutuel, came right back in the fourth with L. F. Telle et al.’s Escort for conditioner Tom Amoss ($2.60), returned to the winner’s circle after the sixth on Ten Broeck’s Warm Breeze, again for Forster with a $23.60 straight price, came back in the eighth aboard Paul Adkins’ Harborplace for trainer Tim Glyshaw ($29), and completed his win quintet in the ninth with Wesley Melcher’s Jias Pal for conditioner Bret Calhoun and a $15.60 win payoff.
“Everything went perfectly,” said Goncalves after his fifth win. “All the horses I rode liked the sloppy track, and I got great trips and didn’t have any excuses. It was just one of those days where everything goes your way.”
Racing resumes Sunday at Fair Grounds with a nine-race program beginning at 1 p.m.
