Race Recap: The Pizza Man delivers in Thursday FG feature

NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, March 21, 2013) – Midwest Thoroughbreds’ The Pizza Man, allowed to settle early, commenced a rally outside the leaders when set down for the drive and got up to best Chester Miller and Pat Dupuy’s Strike Impact by a half-length in late stages of Thursday’s $51,000 allowance and $62,500 optional claiming feature at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Ridden by Leandro Goncalves and trained by Tom Amoss, The Pizza Man returned mutuels of $5.80, $3.60 and $3, toured the about 1 1/16-mile distance over the firm Stall-Wilson Turf Course in 1:45.64 and increased his career earnings to $250,349  with his seventh win from nine lifetime starts.

Strike Impact, away alertly and quickly in command, made the pace with early splits of 25.10 and 50.06, could not stay with the winner in the final strides but gamely held the place by a nose over Alpha Stable et al.’s Twinspired.

Strike Impact paid $3.60 and $2.60 for the place and Twinspired returned $3 for the show.

Racing resumes Friday with a nine-race program beginning at 1 p.m.
