By Graham Ross, Staff Writer
NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, March 07, 2013) – Midwest Thoroughbreds’ Southern Dude proved worthy of his odds-on favoritism in Thursday’s featured $48,000 allowance and $40,000 optional claiming sprint at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots by drawing off for a facile 3 3/4-length tally.
Conditioned by nine-time Fair Grounds trainer champion and current leading trainer Tom Amoss and ridden by two-time Fair Grounds jockey champion and current leading jockey Rosie Napravnik,Southern Dude set early fractions of 22.72 and 45.64 before completing the six furlongs in 1:10.60. The altered son of Lion Tamer returned mutuels of $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10 and increased his career earnings to $167,667 with his sixth win from 11 lifetime starts.
Glen Warren’s Joyce’s Rebel pressed the pace, could not stay with the winner in the final furlong but gamely held the place, paying $3.80 and $2.80 while finishing a head in front of Brittlyn Stable’s Beanwah’smachine, who returned $3.40 to show.
