Believe You Can Odds-On in Saturday's $150,00 New Orleans Ladies; Delaunay Favored in $150,000 Duncan Kenner Stakes
NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, March 07, 2013) – Brereton Jones’s Believe You Can, heroine of both the Grade I Kentucky Oaks and Grade II Fair Grounds Oaks last year, has been installed as the overwhelming 1-5 morning line favorite for Saturday’s fourth running of the listed $150,000 New Orleans Ladies at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Following her back-to-back Oaks victories last year Believe You Can finished third in the Grade I Mother Goose at Belmont Park and was taken out of training shortly thereafter by her trainer Larry Jones.
The daughter of Proud Citizen resumed her training this winter at Fair Grounds and won the $100,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes by 10 1/4 lengths in her first and only start of the year on Feb. 2.
Two-time defending Fair Grounds jockey champion Rosie Napravnik will be in the saddle on Believe You Can.
Named to oppose Believe You Can, with their respective riders listed, are Coffeepot Stables’ Imposing Grace, James Graham; Merrill Scherer and Dan Lynch’s Myriad, Miguel Mena; Brereton Jones’s Young and Lovely, C. J. McMahon; Arthur Morrell’s Premo’s Star, John Jacinto; and Michael Pressley and Steed Jackson’s Totally Tucker, Pat Johnson.
Imposing Grace, who ran second behind Believe You Can in the Tiffany Lass, has finished first or second in her last five starts and appears the strongest competition for Believe You Can once again Saturday.
DELAUNAY LOOMS STRONG CHOICE IN LISTED DUNCAN F. KENNER STAKES – Maggi Moss’s Delaunay,a winner of his last four straight starts, all in stakes races, looms as the strong 3-5 odds-on early choice in Saturday’s listed $150,000 Duncan F. Kenner Stakes at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
In his most recent trip to the post Jan. 26, Delaunay proved best by 4 1/4-lengths in Fair Grounds’ $72,000 F.W. Gaudin Memorial Stakes. Before that the Tom Amoss trainee captured the tradition-rich $98,000 Thanksgiving Handicap on opening day at the Crescent City oval.
The Duncan Kenner, like the Gaudin and the Thanksgiving Handicap, is contested at six furlongs.
Two-time Fair Grounds defending jockey champion Rosie Napravnik is slated for the stirrups astride the altered son of Smoke Glacken.
Capable of providing strong competition for Delaunay is Brittlyn Stable’s Gantry, defending champion in the Duncan Kenner and also the winner of last year’s Gaudin Stakes and Thanksgiving Handicap. Gantry, trained by Ron Faucheux and to be ridden by Richard Eramia, finished second behind Delaunay in this year’s Gaudin and Thanksgiving ’Cap and has been pegged as the 7-2 second choice in the Duncan Kenner.
Completing the Duncan Kenner field, with respective riders assigned, is Northpointe Thoroughbreds’ Amanecer de Oro,John Jacinto;Michael Maker’s Ghost Is Clear, James Graham; Raut LLC’s Hero of Order, Shaun Bridgmohan; and Thomas Galvin’s Su Casa G Casa, Miguel Mena.
