Doc Almon Wins Sprint Feature

NEW ORLEANS (Thursday, February 28, 2013) – Cheyenne Stable’s Doc Almon, away alertly and never far back, commenced a rally on the outside after being set down for the drive, took command at the furlong grounds and increased the margin the rest of the way in Thursday’s $47,000 allowance and $50,000 optional claiming sprint feature at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.

Trained by Bret Calhoun and ridden by Miguel Mena, Doc Almon returned mutuels of $5.80, $3.20 and $3, toured the six furlongs in 1:10.96 and increased his career earnings to $62,754 with his second win in six career starts.

Cindy and Larry Jones and Francis Ray’s South Street made the pace with early fractions of 22.28 and 46.30, could not with stand the winner in the final furlong when beaten 1 1/4-lengths at the wire but was easily second best, finishing 4 1/2-lengths to the good of Merrill Scherer and Dan Lynch’s Don’t Be Mad.

South Streetpaid $6.80 and $5.40 and Don’t Be Mad returned $4.20.

Racing resumes Friday at Fair Grounds with the fourth of sixth Starlight Racing programs featuring nine races and a special late first post time of 5 p.m.
