Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots hosts the tenth annual Summer Quarter Horse Meet presented by REDD’s Apple Ale and Tito’s Handmade Vodka, including the introduction of the inaugural Wiener Dog Summer Sausage Sprint on Saturday, August 19 and the return of Camel and Ostrich racing on Friday, August 25. This season’s Quarter Horse meet includes 10 action-packed days over four weekends with the “World’s Fastest Athletes” and fun for the whole family.

AQHA Wrangler Racing Aces

Martha Claussen will make an appearance at Fair Grounds on Friday, August 18 on behalf of the AQHA Wrangler Racing Aces. She will be onsite throughout the opening day card to offer fan education assistance and will share her insights on the LQHBA Sale Futurity trials in paddock previews.  The first 100 fans will receive a free $2 betting voucher, courtesy of LQHBA.

Opening Weekend Highlights

On the track, Opening Day includes ten trials for the biggest stakes race on the Fair Grounds Quarter Horse calendar, the estimated $285,000 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders Association Sale Futurity, to be run on Saturday, September 9. The highlight of a stakes program that includes a total of ten stakes worth $585,000, the LQHBA Sale Futurity has attracted to the trials many of the best Louisiana-bred two-year-olds.

Summer Sausage Sprint

Due to an abundance of entries, the ever-popular Spring Wiener Dog Racing Card returns in the inaugural Wiener Dog Summer Sausage Sprint.  Highlighted by over 40 local wiener dogs vying for the title of the first Summer Fair Grounds Champion, these lovable K-9’s will emerge from their cool-zone staging area and compete in 4 Heats to advance to a Final Round. Following one last 30-yard Sprint, the top three will share in nearly $1,000 of prize money, while all participants receive special gifts from Double M Feed, Garden & Pet Supply.  First post on August 19th is 3 p.m. for the Wiener Dog Summer Sausage Sprint and encompasses 4 heats that will run consecutively following the first 4 horse races of the day. Patrons may swing by to visit the contenders in the cool-zone misting tent and younger race fans may also enjoy three adjacent inflatable bounce houses. Food Truck fare will be provided by local favorites: Bratz Y’all, Crepes a la Carte and Frencheeze.

Exotic Animal Racing

Back by popular demand and increased to a total of three races, Camel and Ostriches are on the card Friday, August 25th.  Fans are encouraged to arrive early as exotic races are currently scheduled to run just after 6 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., respectively.  On August 25th only, trackside patrons may enjoy a covered seating area on the apron complete with fans, cool-zone misting stations and three adjacent inflatable bounce houses for younger race fans.  Food Truck fare will be provided by local favorites, Bratz Y’all, Crepes a la Carte and Frencheeze.

The Clubhouse Dining Room will also offer a family-friendly limited menu on August 19 and 25th  only that is inclusive of mini-pizza, chicken quesadilla, pulled pork po-boy, Thai chili or BBQ wings, Nathans® chili cheese hot dogs, chili cheese fries, supreme nachos and drunken shrimp cocktail. Concessions stands will also be available.  Feature beverages and drink specials for the Meet will include Redd’s Apple Ale, Miller Coors products and Tito’s Handmade Vodka.  The reservation line for dining room tables with purchase of Clubhouse Admission opens July 31 and is available Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. by calling 504-948-1024. For groups of 25 or more, private suites and party rooms are available and may be reserved by calling Group Sales at 504-948-1285.

Tickets, Pricing and Valet

First post on August 19th is 3 p.m. for the Wiener Dog Summer Sausage Sprint and encompasses 4 heats, which will run consecutively following the first 4 horse races of the day with the finals occurring after Race 6. On August 25th Exotic racing first post is set for after 5 p.m. and exotic animal races are set to post after 6 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., respectively but are subject to change. All other Quarter Horse racing days’ first post time is 12:30 p.m. and includes August 18, 24, 26, 31 & September 1-2, 8-9 (all times Central Daylight Time). General Admission for live racing is free except for the Wiener Dog Summer Sausage Sprint on August 19th and Exotic Animal racing night August 25th. Those nights General Admission is $5 for everyone 13 and older. Kids 12 and under are FREE each night. General Admission tickets are currently available for sale at fgno.com/tickets. Clubhouse Admission is $15 for Ages 13 and older on both Aug 19th and 25th and again, $10 for every other regular race day.  All Grandstand and Clubhouse box seats are open seating and are first-come, first-served basis. Valet parking will be offered on the specialty race days only at $15 for regular parking and $25 for VIP parking.
