Road to the Derby Kickoff Day
Come watch top thoroughbreds compete in 5 stakes races worth over $600,000 in purses including the Grade III Col. E.R. Bradley and the Grade III Lecomte. There will be numerous activities for the kids as it will also be another edition of our Family Day! Please continue to check our website for additional updates.
One of five stakes races on this afternoon's card, the Marie G. Krantz will feature older fillies and mares going 1 Mile and 1/16th on the Turf for $75,000. Clark O. Brewster's Cherokee Queen made the Marie G. Krantz her second stakes victory of last year's meet for trainer Steve Margolis and jockey Shaun Bridgmohan.
The $75,000 Louisiana Handicap will feature top older horses going 1 Mile and 1/16th on the dirt. Last year's race was won in front running style by Cathy & Bob Zollars and Mark Wagner's Thiskyhasnolimit for leading trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Shane Sellers.
The three-year old fillies take to the track for the $125,000 Silverbulletday Stakes. 2011 Kentucky Oaks and Fair Grounds Oaks winner Believe You Can used this race last year to start her tremendous campaign. Believe You Can is owned by Brereton C. Jones and trained by Larry Jones and was ridden to victory by Rosie Napravnik. Will there be another Kentucky Oaks winner in this year's field?
The first graded stakes on the Fair Grounds Stakes Schedule is the Col. E.R. Bradley, a test for older horses going 1 Mile and 1/16th on the Turf for a purse of $125,000. In last year's running, Andrews T&S Racing's Mr. Vegas was allowed to set slow fractions and fnished strongly in victory for trainer Richie Scherer and jockey Miguel Mena.
The three-year olds will begin their campaign to earn valuable points as part of the Road to the Kentucky Derby in today's Grace III Lecomte stakes going 1 Mile and 70 yards for $200,000. Breereton Jones' Mr. Bowling scored in this race last season for trainer Larry Jones and jockey Robby Albarado.
