Brisnet review of Saturday's Calder Juvenile Stakes action.
With win payoffs in the six juvenile stakes at Calder on Saturday ranging from the $93.40 generated by Retire To What in the Fasig Tipton Turf Dash Stakes to Jackson Bend's $3.40 Florida Stallion Affirmed Stakes divided, mixed results may have been experienced by handicappers. However, using the Brisnet Ultimate Past Performances could have unearthed some value plays.
Race 7. Catcharisingstar Stakes. Miss Delite, who returned $8.60, was a solid play for many using the Brisnet Ultimate Past Performance in the first stakes of the afternoon. The clear, by over five points, Prime Power pick, Miss Delite was also top on the Early Pace Last Race category in the Ultimate Race Summary as well as on Average Competitive Level (ACL). With a run style of "E/P 4" and wth six fillies that were rated "E", or need the lead types, in the field it was expected that the race would be run to suit her. The race unfolded perfectly for Miss Delite and she ran out a comfortable two and a quarter winner.
Race 8. Seacliff Stakes. Top on Prime Power as well as the Speed Last Race, Early Pace Last Race and Late Pace Last race categories, Hear Ye Hear Ye was the obvious choice for Brisnet users. However, as the 0.50/1 favorite the colt offered little value making his first start over a route distance. A look at the Run Style column in the Ultimate Summary could have led to a lucrative payoff. Indeed, Hear Ye Hear Ye was one of five of the eight starters to own an "E" type style while Wave Me By and Christopher'simage were two off the pace type runners in a field filled with speed. They finished first and second and produced an exacta of $168.00.
Race 9. Florida Stallion Susan's Girl Stakes. Myakka City, Sweetlalabye and Joanie's Catch had all been running in stakes races and were the top three Prime Power Picks. However, top ranked in the Summary's Speed Last Race category was Rosebud's Ridge, a position earned when she wired a maiden field earlier in the month. She was also ranked second best on Early Pace Last Race and Late Pace Last Race and proved these figures legitimate when taking the Susan's Girl at overlaid odds of 17.70/1.
Race 10. Linday Frolic Stakes. Although the unplaced Seattle Zip was the five point clear Prime Power pick, boxing the top three selections would have led to the Gator Brew/The Isabella Angel exacta which returned $50. As with Miss Delite three races earlier, Gator Brew, who returned $14.20 to her win backers, was also top on ACL.
Race 11. Fasig Tipton Turf Dash Stakes. Every now and again it can be hard to find any reason to have supported a particular winner and Retire To What is one example. Stepping up to this stakes after winning a $12,500 maiden claimer in a relatively slow time, the colt surprised most and returned $93.40 as the longest shot on the board.
Race 12. Florida Stallion Affirmed Stakes. Formfulness returned in the shortest field of the six stakes when the first four Prime Power Picks filled out the superfecta. Unfortunately, little value could be found in this race with the exacta returning $6 and the trifecta $8.80.
